Overcoming the Fear of Success: Lessons from Andre Smith
Overcoming the Fear of Success
This week during my Strategic Relationship Marketing Seminar Series with Katidja Youssouf, we were introduced to Andre Smith, the CEO of Flip & Floss. Andre gave a very inspiring talk about his journey, his company’s approach to customer experience management (CXM), and his career advice. He started off the morning by sharing his personal story, explaining how he moved from Jamaica to Canada. He also mentioned how he attended York University, which I thought was cool because that is where I also did my undergrad. He then worked at CAMH and later at WSIB before making the bold decision to quit his job and start Flip & Floss. One of the most interesting things he spoke about was the "fear of success," which is not something people usually talk about. It made me think about how a lot of the time people tend to hold themselves back because they are be afraid of what success might bring.
Principles of Customer Experience Management (CXM)
Andre also went over the principles of CXM, this design is focused on purpose, people, and impact. He explained to us it is important that businesses should always design with purpose, and they need to really understand their "why". This was really moving for me because it really stressed the importance of a clear reason behind what we do, it can be a great motivator. He also shared the importance of being customer-centric, putting people first leads to passion and growth. Finally, he talked about designing for impact, his personal goal being to help 1 million kids. What really stuck with me here is that businesses can and should have a meaningful mission beyond money.
Another key part of Andre's speech was how Flip & Floss is adapting to CXM. They are using AI-driven insights to personalize their offerings, focusing on customer needs and feedback, and building emotional connections through marketing. This made me realize how important it is for companies to listen to their customers and continuously improve. He also spoke about the power of using surveys and reviews to refine customer interactions and remove any issues. These strategies can certainly help a company build trust and loyalty, which are crucial for long-term success.
Andre's career tips were also very useful and insightful. As many speakers before him have mentioned, he went over how crucial networking is. He also told us to never be afraid to pivot, and always put customers first. He also shared the importance of gaining hands-on experience and developing data analytic skills. One thing that he mentioned that stood out to me was his advice to, if possible, work with a startup. Startups give you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in many different areas and you learn a lot in a short period of time.
This talk was really inspiring to me as a postgrad marketing student. It really made me feel like I should be putting myself out there more, networking, and most importantly, not be afraid to take risks. Andre's speech taught me it's okay to change paths and try new things based on passion and desire. What was especially motivating was his message about overcoming the fear of success, because sometimes I doubt myself or I am nervous about taking those next big steps. Listening to Andre made me realize I can achieve anything I want if I put my mind to it.
Conclusion
Overall, this session boosted my confidence and gave me a lot of motivation for the future. Marketing isn't just about selling products and money; it's about passion, desire, growth, meaningful connections with customers, and creating a real impact. With the right mindset and determination, I can accomplish anything I want in my career.
